WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF MODEL BOATING

Model boating brings the excitement of sailing into a smaller, finely crafted form. Whether radio-controlled, free-sailing, or scale replicas of historical vessels, model boats offer a unique and rewarding way to engage with the principles of sailing and naval design.

It’s a hobby that combines engineering, craftsmanship, competition, and creativity. The model boating community is passionate, precise, and always ready to welcome new enthusiasts.

Reasons to Start

Model boating is a highly engaging and satisfying pursuit. It also:

  • Encourages precision, problem-solving, and patience.
  • Develops an understanding of sail dynamics, balance, and design.
  • Offers competitive racing, creative building, and historical modelling.
  • Connects hobbyists of all ages through local clubs and international events.

How to Start

You can begin by joining a local model boat club or visiting a model marina. There are beginner-friendly kits, online tutorials, and clubs that welcome newcomers regardless of age or experience. Some people start with building; others start with sailing. You don’t need a workshop or expensive tools to begin.

You can also register here with the World Sailing Day | May 28 Organisation and we’ll connect you with member groups that support model boating around the world.

Model boating is supported by national and international associations, offering events, building resources, and competition classes – including those aligned with World Sailing-recognised formats.
