WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF INLAND SAILING
Inland sailing brings the joy of being on the water to lakes, rivers, and reservoirs around the world. Whether you’re day sailing, training, or racing, inland waters offer accessible and scenic environments to enjoy sailing. It’s a great entry point for newcomers and a lifelong passion for many experienced sailors. The inland sailing community is friendly, local, and ready to welcome you aboard!
Reasons to Start
Inland sailing is a practical and enjoyable way to engage with the sport. It also:
- Makes sailing more accessible, often closer to home.
- Offers consistent training and racing environments.
- Promotes strong technical skills due to varied and challenging conditions.
- Builds local connections and a tight-knit sailing culture
- Canal sailing is a great way to relax and enjoy a quiet vacation with all the comforts.
How to Start
Starting inland sailing is easy and often more convenient than coastal sailing. Many towns and cities have sailing clubs on the shores of the lakes or rivers. Offering beginner courses, boat rentals, and youth programmes. You don’t need to own a boat—just reach out to your local club or association.
You can also register here with the World Sailing Day Organisation, and we will connect you to our member organisations supporting inland sailing in your area.
Information and Opportunities
Inland sailing is supported by local and national associations.
As example, the British Inland Waterways Association – has a lot of information for the English waterways (https://waterways.org.uk/) and are active in supporting the restoration of the threatened parts of the circa 2000 miles managed by Canal & River Trust, the 630 miles run by the Environment Agency and those operated by Scottish Canals.
Registered World Sailing SAILOR members get access to club directories, event calendars, and development programmes.
