Invitation
To All
World Sailing Day is a global celebration dedicated to the spirit, heritage, and future of sailing.
Held each year on 28th May, it aims to bring together sailors, clubs, federations, maritime organisations, coastal communities, and ocean enthusiasts from around the world in one united moment: it creates a global focal point for sailing.
On this day, the global sailing community, defined in its broadest terms, has a shared day to honour its past, expand its future, and promote the values that make sailing such a important part of human culture.
Sailing has shaped exploration, science, trade, and discovery for thousands of years. World Sailing Day exists to preserve this rich maritime heritage and to honour iconic vessels, stories, and pioneers whose achievements continue to inspire. It also shines a light on the essential work of maritime museums and educational institutions that safeguard our seafaring legacy for future generations.
But World Sailing Day is not only about history – it is about renewal and inspiration.
Sailing in all its forms is a mainstay and life-preserver of many portside communities and drives not only local industries but in many places plays a large contribution to waterfront developments and tourism. And it is the sea that will be the next to be explored.
Despite this, sailing participation is declining due to progressively higher barriers to entry. It is up to us to lower these barriers, to coordinate and focus activities in order to bring more people to all the forms of sailing, whether wind or motor, foil or classic.
World Sailing Day serves as a catalyst to open doors, welcome newcomers, and introduce children and adults alike to the joy, confidence, and lifelong skills that sailing teaches.
By involving clubs, schools, marinas, shipyards, and associations, World Sailing Day becomes a gateway into the world of sailing for people of all ages and abilities.
At its heart, World Sailing Day champions sustainability and ocean responsibility. World Sailing Day highlights environmental stewardship, supports innovation in green marine technology, and raises awareness of challenges such as end-of-life boats and the protection of marine ecosystems.
The day also strengthens the wider blue economy by spotlighting the marine industry, promoting tourism, supporting coastal communities, and creating new opportunities for collaboration, sponsorship, and global visibility. It becomes a cultural moment that grows year after year, attracting media, building momentum, and giving the worldwide sailing community a platform to celebrate, educate, and inspire.
Above all, World Sailing Day is an invitation.
An invitation to join a global community, to honour our maritime past, to protect our oceans, and to share the thrill of the wind and the water.
Whether you sail, spectate, support, or simply admire the sea from the shore, this is a day for everyone.
We are looking forward to seeing you !
